Serena Sun backstory. Some of this information might not actually be part of the series/non-canon.
I was born 24 years ago on Small Island after Gold D. Roger was excuted, meaning Marines were searching for any child-bearing women and capturing them in case Roger bore any offspring. My mom, Samantha, was sent to the Marine's base leaving my dad, Leto, alone. Small Island is in the East Blue. A sea above where Portgas D. Rouge was suspected for being Roger's companion.
After Samantha was escorted back to Small Island, she was informed that my dad has set sail by Keys. Keys owned the one of the famous bars in the South Blue, The Quickeys Bar, and was one of Leto's childhood friends. He didn't know what was going to happen to her and was anxious to have a child, but he left before Samantha could stop him from acheiving his dream. Samantha was against his dream, but accepted the fact she couldn't do anything about it. Condolenses, gifts, and food was sent to her to cheer her up, but Sun grew up with a dull childhood anyways.
Her father had the dream to buy Vegapaint from Vegapunk. For one reason, to paint his dreamhouse with his first-born son, or so he thought. Leto was an arcutechturist who was one of the main fighters of the island with Keys. Neither of them had an ability, but were both physically strong. Keys always knew about Leto's dream since they were kids. It wasn't noticible, but he shed a tear before he left Samantha with the painful truth.
After I was born, my mom smiled. A true smile, in a long time. She didn't have anyone to cheer her up other than Keys, Samantha had a lot of stress raising me up, but kept the pain hidden. After 2 years of her life, the townsfolk stopped sending gifts/visiting her. She struggled hard for 7 more years, and stopped paying for me to go to school. Sun didn't know what was going on with her mother so she just stayed in her house all day. Samantha left me at home to find a job, so I had nothing to do. I developed a love for drawing and it felt like my 6th sense. Either it was from my peers, or a talent passed down from my father. I grabbed my
sketchbook, but couldn't find anything to draw with. I went upstairs to her mom's room to see if she had
crayons, instead found a belt. It was hidden in a box at the bottom of the closet with tape surrounding the
sides. When I saw it, I cut-out the bottom and pulled it out. The belt had paint-pockets spelling out the word
ROY G BIV representing the colors of the rainbow. White and black were seperated from the main colors, and
a paintbrush to complete the look. Sun went She walked into the backyard to draw the scenery of the forest
behind and sat down on a grass. It was really pretty, that forest. I walked around to paint more screenshots
until I bumped into a strange looking fruit. It was a light blue with the shape of a big apple. The weirdest part of it was the swirls blotched all over the skin. I decided to draw it and quickly return home to eat it for dinner and save some for mom. I I entered the house and ran to the kitchen to cut it up. Taking the big bite, I swallowed a little and immdieately spat the rest out. It was disgusting! It tasted like bitter ink! After dumping it back into the forest, I hung my pictures all over my house with some tape. Waiting, the door finally opened with a tired aura.
"Welcome home, Mom!" I let out a big smile.
"Haha, what's with the attitude all of a sudden?" smiling back.
"I want to show you something, follow me!" I grabbed her hand leading her to the hallway of paintings.
"Amazing, Sun! You drew all of these?" she asked.
"Of course, I used this belt for all of it!" I threw the belt with the paint over my shoulder from under clothes.
"SUN!" My mom said, now with an angry look.
"Where did you get that?" she yelled.
I shook in fear. I wasn't used to her scowling at me like this.
"I f-found it in your c-closet..." I whispered.
"Why were you in my room?" a little bit quieter.
"To find something to draw with, of course."
"That's all? Don't you have paint in your backpack?"
"No, the teacher wouldn't let me."
After a few seconds, she calmed down and kneeled to look at me straight in the eye.
"Nevermind, it was meant for you in the first place." She smiled at me once more.
"Really?" I said with a confused look.
"Yep. That belt was only for his first born. Although, your father was expecting you to be a boy."
"So.... I can really keep it?"
"Go ahead."
We walked down the hallway again, both commenting on the photos as if we were real art critics. All was fun until my mom stopped at one picture.
"Sun..... what is this?" She peeled the drawing of the nasty fruit I ate from the wall.
"That's the apple I picked up from the forest. It tasted bad, so I threw it away."
"You ATE it?"
"....yeah?"
"Do you feel anything has gone out of the oridinary?!"
"Not really... what are you mad at me for? What is it?"
"Gah, okay. Let me explain to you. This is a devil fruit. If you eat it you get supernatural powers and can't swim."
"Wahahahaha! Mommy, you're so funny! Supernatural? Are you seri-"
"Yes, I am."
"Oh. Uh, I never knew how to swim anyway..."
Samantha sighed. She went to her room to cool off leaving me dumbstruck. Samantha couldn't take these 2 things at once. First the belt, and now the devil fruit. Instead of laying in bed all day she day, she needed to sort things out. After cooling off, she entered my room slowly trying not to interrupt me painting.
"Sun."
"Yes, mommy?"
"Did you figure it out?"
"Figure out what?"
"What kind of ability you have, of course."
"For the funny fruit?"
"Haha, yeah."
"Okay.. Well, come here."
Samantha sat next to me and I gave her my hand. My fingers turned blue and hard to the tips, scaring my
mom for a second. I quickly retreated my hand looking back onto my painting.
"So, are you mad at me?" I said nervously.
"No... Just use your ability for good things, okay?"
"Sure mommy."
We smiled at each in unison and hugged tightly.
Over the past 3 years (12 years old), my mom and I have lived happily like any other family. Keys had helped with our bills after hearing the position they were in. Owning one of the best restaraunts in the East Blue, he was bound to make extra money. Samantha was feeling guilty just taking the money like that, so she volunteered helping out with business.
I was surprisingly talented at whatever I did and became the talk of the town. During the 3 year time-skip, I had become just like my dad. A great painter. I was left out from interuppting my mom work. I stepped out of the picture to past the time and saw a myserious man painting the restaraunt's walls. I walked up to him slowly and asked:
"Can I help?"
The man turned his head and looked back quickly.
"I can't?"
"Uh, sure you can. Nice belt you have there."
"Thank you, it's from my dad."
"Haha, you're a cool kid. Go ahead and grab a paint bucket. Rumor has it your very talented, Serena."
"You know my name?"
"Of course."
Silence was in the air. My mom stepped out of the entrance, and by that time, the man was gone. I stared up and down to see the walls a beautiful orange and blue.
"Sun! I was wondering where you were."
I stepped back inside and grabbed my sketchbook. I had to draw that man. I had a feeling that he played an important role in my life. It was either that or I was being paranoid. We closed the restaraunt at twilight, with my mom exhausted. I felt bad for her so I wanted to cheer her up with my drawing.
"Mom!"
Samantha took a sip of her water before talking.
"Yes?"
"I want to show you something."
"Go ahead."
I held up the drawing of the man proudly.
"Sun..."
"What's wrong? Don't you like it?"
"I do... it just-" Samantha sighed.
I looked at her with a curious look for a few seconds when she finally spoke,
"This is your father."
"WHAT?" I was surprised and put on a you-scared-me face.
"Where did you see him?" My mom looked like she was about to break into tears.
"We were painting together outside the restaraunt..."
"Oh..."
My mom slowly closed her eyes and fell to the ground dropping the paper.
"MOM!"
I jumped up to hear Keys enter the room with a don.
"What happened here?
"I don't know! Hurry and bring her to the hospital!"
The both rushed to the emergency room in the only clinic in town. The doctors immediately took Samantha in seeing her position. She was known since her husband was the one who blueprinted their hospital. Keys and I panicked at the nurse while giving her worried complaints. After a few minutes, the same nurse walked up to us with a tired smile.
"She's okay!" I shot up from my seat and celebrated with a little dance. Keys chuckled and pulled off his worried look.
"Yay! She's okay~ Mom gets to live another day~ She's okay~"
"Hehehe, so what caused her to faint?"
"It's nothing serious. Her body felt exhausted from overworking. More work might lead to athritis. Here is her prescription and medecine."
"Thank you! If I can, I'll persuade her to cut hours from the bar. She's a very persistent and kind person."
"That would be great! Samantha should be coming out shortly. Have a great day!"
Time went by, then finally the doors opened with a smiling women. I ran up to Samantha and hugged her with Keys escorted us back to our house. We stepped in and he gave us his wishes. Samantha thanked him and soon; he left. My mom sat in on the couch and faced toward me.
"Sun, you know about my condition, right?"
"Yes I do, Mom."
"Then-" She stopped for a second.
"Yes?"
"Then, can you take over my position?"
"Position? In what?"
"The position in the restaurant."
I was shocked for my mom saying this. I have no cooking skills, and I know she knows that.
"You can learn how to cook with one of my coworkers."
"B-b-b-but...."
She placed her hand on my shoulder and stared at me intensely.
"It's for the best."
"Okay..."
The argument slowly faded away with me now assigned to be the next chef of The Quickeys Bar. The next day, Samantha and I walked to the restaurant. When we entered the back door, there were many chefs tossing pans and mixing food, it was ridiculous. Samantha left to rest at home, leaving me with Keys. Keys taught me how to use the stove, burner, and everything. Although, there was one thing left amist. I loved drawing more than cooking, but since it was for my mom's good, I had to do it.
Over the next 15 years, I eventually became the restaurant's head-chef. Keys knew I loved to draw, so he let me volunteer painting houses and people, which made our business boom up even more! While becoming more and more famous, pirates have tried to rob us, but I used my ability to defeat them. Training by defeating pirates was the only training I got, being busy in the kitchen. My mom has been sick for a while, so I take a break to visit her. I knocked on the door and my mom opened with a horrified face. She was holding the daily newspaper that had dried tear stains behind a body of text.
"What's wrong, Mother? I got some soup from the bar like you asked."
"Sun..."
My mom had hugged me and it felt awkward because I was taller than her, but I hugged back. She didn't tell me what made her cry, but simply handed the newspaper to me. "Leto Sun, Captain of the Bucket Pirates: Killed by Shichibukai - Blackbeard". Keys had told me who Leto was, and I understood right away how she was feeling. I clenched the belt at my waist, that was a present from my father. When suddenly, a pirate ship had docked our island.
